Access to the printed collections is through the catalogues. There are two main sequences:
Most of the newspapers have been microfilmed. Likewise work on the Archives of the Order is being carried out under an agreement with Hill Monastic Manuscript Library of St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota U.S.A. At the end of 1997 the National Library had an estimated 340,000 volumes. Access to the Main Reading Room is free of charge and without the need for any form of registration although this will change once computerisation starts to have an impact on the catalogues. Readers may be required to present an identification document. The seating arrangements in the Main Reading Room were revamped in January 1998. There are now three areas: a newspaper and periodicals section; a section for general use and at the far end an area reserved for serious research work. Microfilm readers are available and OPAC stations, which will also give access to the catalogues of other libraries in Malta will be installed by the end of January 1998. Readers may request photocopies. Apart from prints from microfilms, most are serviced there and then. |
