These libraries have selected some of the most stunning artefacts in their collections, like rare and precious books, illuminated manuscripts, bookbindings, drawings, prints and decorated papers. Together, these treasures are an impressive representation of European cultural heritage throughout the centuries. Short descriptions have been added to provide essential information about the treasures and their provenance.

Danish Collections (The National Collections)

The Danish collections contain works published in Denmark. This refers to books, periodicals, printed ephemera and newspapers published in Denmark since the first book was printed in 1482. The term "Denmark" comprises present-day Denmark as well as countries and regions which have belonged to the Danish crown at one point in time, such as Norway until 1814, Iceland until 1944, Southern Schleswig and Holstein until 1864. The collections have been created through legal deposit, an obligation by all printers to send one or more copies of everything they produce to the Royal Library, first promulgated in 1697. Since 1998 cd-roms, videos and dvds have been subject to legal deposit. In addition, the library has received gifts of books and periodicals which have not been deposited. Since the late 18th century the library has also attempted to purchase all books and periodicals, dealing with Denmark or Danes, or translations of Danish authors. of importance to Danish culture and research into Danish society. Among the sub-collections included are Pamphlets and corporate publications, newspapers, Dano-Norwegian literature on World War I and The Collection of Clandestine Literature published during the German Occupation of Denmark 1940-45.

Rare Book Collection in The Royal Library of Denmark

The Royal Library holds invaluable historical book collections, both Danish as foreign. The Rare Book Collection contains about 4.500 incunabula, i.e. books printed before 1501. At the death of the great Danish book collector Count Otto Thott in 1785 the library received all his books printed before 1531, of which about 1.500 were incunabula. Later the collection experienced particular growth in the time of Director H.O. Lange (1901-1924), and today it is the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. The Post-Incunabula Collection comprises books from the period 1501-1530. It was not established until the mid-1970s and currently contains about 6.500 volumes. Early in the 19th century the books printed on parchment were gathered in a special collection, the Parchment Collection, which today comprises of 125 volumes. In the 1950s a Study Collection of the History of the Book was established by selecting books from the foreign collections. These books were to demonstrate characteristic examples of binding, printing, illustrations and previous ownership. The department further takes care of a group of foreign books from the Older Collection (Ældre Samling) of the Royal Library. These books - about 7.000 vols. - are particularly rare and/or precious, and among them are many items of great interest from a book historical point of view.

The most rare and consulted manuscripts of the National Library of Florence

The collection starts from the Missal Ottoniano of the X century which is the oldest manuscript of the National Library of Florence, and it continues with the Palatine manuscript of 556, the so-called "Lancelot", famous for the doubts relating to its text and scribe, and its beautiful decorations with more than three hundred drawings in pen. In the collection several are the treaties about architecture with important milestones such as the works of Filarete, or Francesco di Giorgio Martini, or the Part Three of the book related to engineering matters of Jacopo Mariano so called "Taccola",or the "Zibaldone" by Lorenzo Ghiberti. This collection includes types of manuscripts for which it is highly difficult, if not impossible, to allow consultation due to poor conservation or even the size; between these: the "Banco Rari 18", Laudario of the fourteenth century, whose parchments and miniatures has been corrupted by the time, or the great volume of Cosmographia of Claudius Ptolemy, which is no possible to consult because of the size / weight and the fact that it has been subjected to a recent restoration.

First Russian Newspaper, "Vedomosti" (News), 1703 - 1727

The Russia's First Printed Newspaper Vedomosti database includes a selection from the Library materials reproduced in electronic form. The database contains not only details but the full text of the first printed news publications. This official gazette of the Crown was established by Tsar Peter the Great on 16 December 1702. The single column text newspaper was produced on several sheets of small size. The first editions of the Vedomosti was printed in Early Cyrillic. In 1708 the Old Church Slavonic alphabet was modernized into a simplified secular script. The gazette came out irregularly, thus, 46 issues appeared in 1705, and only one appeared in 1718. Till 1711 the Vedomosti was published in the Moscow printing house, then it was printed sometimes in Moscow, sometimes in St. Petersburg, in turn. Neither the National Library of Russia nor the Russian State Library holds all printed copies of the gazette, so both libraries have compiled a union complete set of the digitised newspaper from 1703 to 1727.
